I grew up in Chicago and could always make my way to the lake for inspiration. After moving to the North Shore suburbs, finding lake-front access has been a bit difficult, especially during the summer, because I am not a resident of one of the lake-front communities.
But recently I have discovered The Town of Fort Sheridan has taken a good chunk of lake front and made a Forest Preserve. I stopped to take a look at what was being done. I was enthralled with the beauty of this area and the chance to finally walk it. Here is the completed a piece from my Fort Sheridan wanderings.
The history about the area that I know: The Town of Fort Sheridan was an actual army base established in 1889 right after the Hay Market riot.
Marshall Field and other prominent Chicago Business men purchased over 600 acres and gave the land to the Federal Governemnt to build an army base. The soldiers first job was to protect the rich who were moving out of the city and building mansions around or near the fort, and then to squash any labor rebellions occuring in the Chicago area. Including the one at Pullman Town.
